Mobiles and Driving

PSA Texting while Driving U.K. Ad (Youtube and Vimeo)

Texting While Driving: How Dangerous is it? - Car and Driver

Indian Ad Campaign about Mobile Phone use and driving

The first two videos are the same but in different formats (Youtube and Vimeo). It's a British campaign against texting and driving. Although the sad story told in the video is acted out, the reality is probably worse. what you see happens on a daily basis and sometimes in a more tragic and horrific way.

The second Video showcases an interesting study done to compare driving while texting and driving while under the influence of Alcohol. Although both are dangerous, the study found that texting was actually more dangerous.

The road safety poster ( ملصق أو بوستر سلامة الطرق ) above is an Indian ad effectively expressing the dangers of mobile/cell phone use while driving.

Please read this excellent article on Mobile phones and driving available on Wiki.

Unfortunately no Arabic version of it is available yet. Anyone care to translate the article? I wish I could, but I'd rather leave it to more talented Arabic speakers!

The main points in the article:
  • Driver inattention is estimated to be a factor in between 20 to 50 percent of all police-reported crashes.

  • Studies have shown that cell phone drivers exhibited similar or greater impairment than intoxicated drivers.

  • Driving while using a handsfree cellular device is not safer than using a hand held cell phone, as concluded by case-crossover studies. The increased "cognitive workload" involved in holding a conversation, not the use of hands, causes the increased risk.

  • Text messaging had the greatest relative risk, with drivers being 23 times more likely to experience a safety-critical event when texting. A study conducted found that drivers typically take their eyes off the forward roadway for an average of four out of six seconds when texting, and an average of 4.6 out of the six seconds surrounding safety-critical events.
Please see the full articles for the full information and references.

Driving while speaking on the phone or texting can increase your chances of having an accident by 4 times or more.

The best way to avoid accidents is NOT to use the mobile phone while driving. One effective and sure way to do this is to switch off the phone before embarking on your journey.
SWITCH OFF AND DRIVE OFF.

I got this information (10 facts on youth and road safety) from the WHO road safety website. You can read the English version here, and the full Arabic version is here. I've posted the facts below in Arabic. The WHO Arabic web site on road safety is excellent and contains a wealth of information, including research, publications and posters (like the one above-click on pic to download PDF of poster).
To go to the Arabic website, click on the link below.

Road Safety: Mobile Phones

Hi, I just finished working on a new poster about road safety, click above to see the full size. Hope you like it. Again comments will be appreciated.

Quoting from "The royal Society for the prevention of accidents" document on the issue of mobile phones and road safety:

Drivers who use a mobile phone while driving, whether hand-held or hands-free:
■ are much less aware of what’s happening on the road around them
■ fail to see road signs
■ fail to maintain proper lane position and steady speed
■ are more likely to ‘tailgate’ the vehicle in front
■ react more slowly and take longer to brake
■ are more likely to enter unsafe gaps in traffic
■ feel more stressed and frustrated.

Research indicates that they are also four times more likely to crash, injuring or killing themselves and/or other people.
Using a hands-free phone while driving does not significantly reduce the risks because the problems are caused mainly by the mental distraction and divided attention of taking part in a phone conversation at the same time as driving.

Remember: Switch Off B4 U Drive Off. My own Libyan Version (catch phrase):

or (lol): !

I've designed this banner, please feel free to include in your websites/blogs:

Remember, drive safely......

Road Safety Poster Example

Hi again,

I tried to have a go at designing my own road safety poster (the above one), I hope its OK. If any one has a comment please tell me, esp. if the Arabic needs correcting. Please feel free to download and use it. By the way for those who can't read or understand Arabic, it reads: " Click (tak! in Arabic), the sound that could save your life, seat belts reduce the possibility of death and injuries by 50%, think....use the seat belt!"

As mentioned in my previous post, I will have other safety education stuff, including for children and teachers (including mobile phone wallpapers which people can bluetooth to each other, "spread safety"). Just can't seem to find the time to work on these projects!

The following poster which I borrowed from the "WHO-World Health Organisation", had no corresponding Arabic poster, so I modified it and added Arabic to the poster, I tried contacting the WHO to ask permission for posting it to no avail, Meanwhile I will post the Arabic modification, if any one from the WHO reading this has any objections, please, please tell me and I will withdraw it from my blog immediately, meanwhile I will try to contact them again. Please try to contribute as well. Again, if there any mistakes in the Arabic please tell me! Thanks.
