TAC Road Safety المخدرات والكحول وحوادث المرور

A shocking video about road safety made by the TAC. It shows the danger of reckless driving, especially when under the influence of alcohol/drugs. The REM song "Everybody hurts" makes it even more poignant. If you can't access youtube click here to watch it on vimeo.
The accidents you see in the video happen every day and countless people die, sadly children suffer just as much, if not more. Watch and heed, watch and learn to drive responsibly and make sure others do as well. Otherwise, God forbid, we can all be victims as much as the people in the video. See here (alcohol) and here (drugs) to get more information.

Fat Distribution!

I have been reading an interesting article on the problem of world wide adult obesity, and it certainly has a lot of weight! (lol...sorry, had to say that!).

According to the WHO (World Health Organization) there are currently 1.6 billion overweight adults in the world and that number is projected to grow by 40% over the next 10 years.

The list reflects the percentage of overweight adults aged 15 and over. These are people who have individual body mass indexes (BMI), which measures weight relative to height, greater than or equal to 25. Obesity is defined as having a BMI greater than or equal to 30.
And here are the world wide top 10:
1-Nauru
2-Micronesia
3-Cook Islands
4-Tonga
5-Niue
6-Samoa
7-Palau
8-Kuwait
9-United States
10-Kiribati
Hey... at least the Arab world is represented in the top ten! Thanks Kuwait!
Don't ask me about some of the countries mentioned, I've never heard of them as well! Google them, or go and open an atlas! The only country I recognised was Kuwait, where the hell is the United States!! (lol...sorry Chatalaine!...just joking).
Where is Libya?! I hear you scream! Surely we are not that far behind, or perish the thought, are we part of the top 10 skinniest people in the world?!
No, fear not, Libya is fat as well, but not that fat! lol.
Here are the 10 Fattest Arab countries (the red number is their world ranking)
1-Kuwait (Kabsah??) 8
2-Egypt (Fool, beans!)14
3-UAE (Kabsah?? maybe?) 18
4-Bahrain (Kabsah? again!) 26
5-Saudi Arabia (More Kabsah!)28
6-Qatar (kabsah!, what the hell!)36
7-Jordan (za3ter? What do Jordainians eat? Kabsah as well?) 38
8-Libya (Imbakbaka and bazin!) 78
9-Lebanon (?) 80
10-Syria (?) 82
I just want to say this is not anti-kabsah post! I've never even seen or tasted the thing!

For those who like to balance things, the top 10 least obese nations are as follows (in reverse order):
10-Burundi
9-Central African Republic
8-Cambodia
7-Republic of the Congo
6-Nepal
5-Sri Lanka
4-Vietnam
3-Bangladesh
2-Ethiopia
1-Eritrea
By the way, if you want to calculate your BMI, you can do it here. Good Luck!

Road Safety: The Tragedy

I tried to tone down the above picture as much as I could, I assure you the original picture is more horrific and I have seen worse in real life. I sincerely apologise to any reader if I have offended or shocked, I do so with the best of intentions, some times only shock can bring home the all important message, it also makes this message stay in your mind for longer.
I don't know the particulars of the above picture, but its been widely distributed among people via bluetooth. The accident most likely was in Libya, and bears a sickening resemblance to the Road Safety campaign video I posted yesterday. What are the causes of this accident? I don't know, but I can safely assume that there was 100% chance it could have been prevented. Speed, lack of attention and safety awareness are all plausible causes.

Road traffic accidents are not decreasing they are on the increase, and this is especially so in Libya. For people who have not been to Libya for years, you will not believe the bad nature of driving, the roads are an absolute death trap! The amount of cars has increased exponentially, and the roads are still the same if not worse. And the road rage, especially among the young is rife and getting worse! All of this in an almost unnoticeable traffic regulatory system. The traffic police need effective training, resources, power and protection in order to carry out their essential work. This needs to be done now.

The problem of road deaths and injuries is a global one, quoting from the world bank site on road safety (which you can access here): "Every year more than 1.17 million people die in road crashes around the world. The majority of these deaths, about 70 percent occur in developing countries. Sixty-five percent of deaths involve pedestrians and 35 percent of pedestrian deaths are children. Over 10 million are crippled or injured each year. It has been estimated that at least 6 million more will die and 60 million will be injured during the next 10 years in developing countries unless urgent action is taken." Furthermore: "The Global Burden of Disease study undertaken by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Harvard University and the World Bank showed that in 1990, traffic crashes were assessed to be the world's ninth most important health problem. The study forecasts that by the year 2020 road crashes would move up to third place in the table of leading causes of death and disability facing the world community."

The current table of leading causes of death and disability:

In Libya, the problem is that most people seem to take and accept this reality as an inevitable and unpreventable fate. Scientific proof says other wise, road traffic accidents and their often gruesome consequences can be prevented.
I believe that every one has a responsibility towards their and other peoples safety. The government has a huge role in this and I hope that they begin to adopt the modern scientific methods in counteracting this huge killer.

If any one of responsibility is reading this, I urge you to read the World bank and the WHO's advice on the matter and their guidance on how to implement an effective Road traffic safety system, any work you do will not only save others but may/can save you or your family!

Again, I apologise for posting the above picture if it has offended any one, and I hope we can learn from it and this tragic death which repeats its self more than 2500 times a year in Libya (and increasing) and more than a million times a year globally.

Any one for cancer?

Greetings,
I was watching a news item on an Arabic channel (MBC1), which gave a startling statistic, apparently there are around 35 new cases of cancer diagnosed daily in Saudi Arabia! One of the main reasons posed was possible carcinogens found in the diet.
Now, the funny thing is my grandmother (God bless her), has always been suspicious of modern food, esp. the canned variety! She always tells me: "The food in those cans cause the "bad disease" (almrad al3afen!)", she never uses the "C" word.
Our older generation has more wisdom than us. They have their experience to tell them that there is nothing better than natural and safe organic food, preferably grown and harvested by their own humble hands.
But in our era the only harvest we seem to be getting is the harvest of lives by the over growing specter of cancer.
What causes cancer is a multi billion dollar question, it has no single answer, and many of the answers still elude us. But there is some evidence to the causes of some of the cancers we know.
There is a lot of evidence out there to show that environmental contaminants of food are linked to the increasing cancer rates. Furthermore direct food production, is also implicated, the use of chemical preservatives, artificial colouring, and poor packaging can all be risk factors for developing cancer. Another important risk factor is the method of cooking, apparently over cooking some foods can be risky, esp. overcooking meat.
In many of the Arab countries including Libya, there seems to be a lack of "food safety" awareness, at the official level, we have fancily named authorities, although I seriously doubt their credibility or resources (both in facilities or quality of staff-with due respect to the few).
In Tripoli, if you walk in to any supermarket, you will be amazed at the amount of food and variety available to you. Most is imported over hundreds and thousands of miles. If you stare at the fridge and see the cheese and yogurts (you will be lucky to find yogurt in a fridge, most of it lies out side the fridge), ask your self what is in that food, what chemicals have been used so it can withstand the environmental rigors of transport and storage?!

Last year I was talking to an acquaintance of mine, who is a food technician, I asked tons of questions regarding carcinogens in our diet and food safety in general. One particular thing I remember was asking him about the strange phenomena of finding imported yogurt in Libya, which is a very hot country, lying outside fridges in the shops, with out it going bad! He told me that this kind of yogurt is especially sterilized at the source of production to get rid of all the "good bacteria" that makes yogurt what it is, and chemical preservatives are also added, thus this yogurt can last longer for its transport. To add more insult, artificial colours/flavors are added to these preservatives and last but not least, the all magic ingredient to make this "yuck" bearable: SUGAR, and what you get finally is a plastic container full of sweet preservatives and artificial colourings with minute traces of yogurt ready to go! Would you/ should you feed this to your child?! Many of these chemicals are dangerous and may/can cause cancer. You can only guess at the nutritional value of such food.
This is a small example, so next time you are in a supermarket; think carefully before you drop something into your shopping basket, because you may be inviting a lot more than just good old weight gain!
